Mission Update

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

An update on things we have heard and been told about our mission.

We have been communicating with Elder & Sister Sudweeks in Nairobi, Kenya ( the couple we will replace, with  Elder & Sister Giles (on a CES mission to

Uganda) and Elder and Sister Davis from the Church offices.

Here are some of the things they have told us about our mission.

  1. It’s the best kept secret for missionary couples in the world.
  2. I will wear Dockers or dress pants and white shirts except for church, and zone meetings.   Mom will wear dresses, but with sandals and not dress shoes, and no nylons.
  3. We will live in a two bedroom apt. with all the amenities.   This apartment is fenced compound and has a 24 hour patrol on it.  Encouraged to not stay out after 6 PM.
  4. Family and friends are welcome, encouraged to come and that we will probably get to take some time off for safaris, etc.
  5. We will be directly responsible for the countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, the DR Congo and Republic of the Congo.  We will also travel to each of these countries yearly, or more if needed.  Will be assigned other areas as needed.  We will also fly to each of the places we visit on Kenyan Airlines.
  6. We may travel for other meetings and events, but don’t know where or when yet.
  7. The temperatures average in the 70’s for highs and 50’s for lows throughout the year.  The rainy season is spring and fall.
  8. We will enter the MTC at 10AM on the 10th of December.  Will leave on the 16th for SLC and stay with one of the kids until Thursday the 20th for training in the Church Public Affairs Office.  Will travel home for Christmas on the 20th and we fly out Thurs the 27th at 7:15 AM and will arrive in Nairobi the 28th at 9:30PM.  If everything connects as it should.  We fly to Chicago, London, and

Nairobi.  Only 38 hours, but we lose ten hours time change.
  9. The headwaters of the Nile

River start in our area.  You can catch 200 lb. bass in a lake there.

Kenya has all the big 5 and most all the African animals, and over 400 species of birds.
  10. I have lots more, but ten will probably do it for now.  We will be talking in church on the 9th and Pres. Cannon will set us apart here in Green River, with the family there with us.
  11. Okay, one more, a hernia operation is a pain in the ……….well so far just about everywhere.
